Why is is important to maintain steering cables?
To ensure easy operation at all speeds it is vital to understand your steering cable function and how to reduce system inefficiency and excess free play in operation.
The correct installation is the first step, you must ensure there are no excessive or tight bends in the cable.
A 200mm bend radius is a good guide.
This will provide easy handling at all speeds and help to reduce inefficiency.
Corrosion may be a factor during the life span of a steering cable, this can cause deterioration and affect the operation.
During the steering cable life span always ensure the steering cable end fittings are cleaned and greased periodically to lengthen the life of your system.
Regular inspection of your steering cable is necessary to also improve the lifespan.
If the steering becomes hard to operate or inconsistent in movement, you find cuts in the outer conduit surface or any other component damage don’t wait or delay, replace the cable immediately.
When storing the boat for the winter months or any other extended time it is a good idea to disconnect the steering cable from the motor.
You can then grease and leave disconnected for the idle period.
While not being used it is recommended to turn the steering wheel occasionally to keep the cable operational.
When ready to use again ensure the cable moves freely and then re-install to motor.
Please note your steering cable is assembled for life and you should not attempt to disassemble.
