How to measure a new steering cable?

2 September 2021

Once you’ve chosen a steering system you will need to measure the length or your new steering cable.

Each boat has a specific requirement for a different length cable dependent on the length of the boat and the routing of the cable.

The cable length should be measured as follows:

  • Measure the dimensions of A, B and C in centimetres
  • Determine how many 90 degree bends the cable will have in the routing
  • Determine whether the cable installation is:
    • Through the engine tilt tube
    • Transom support
    • Splash well

As an example:

If A = 100 cm, B = 200 cm and C = 60 cm, assume there are two 90-degree bends in the routing.  The length of the required cable would be:

100 + 200 + 60 = 360

Subtract 20 cm on account of the two 90-degree bends.

360 – 20 = 340

Add 30.5 on account of the tilt tube installation 340 + 30.5 = 370.50 cm

  • For transom support and splash well mounting installation (Diagram 2 and 3)
  • Add dimension A + B = C
  • Subtract 10cm from the above total for each 90-degree bend in the cable routing.  You have the required length in centimetres

An example:

If A = 100 cm, B = 200 cm and C = 60 cm, assume there are two 90-degree bends in the routing.  The length of the required cable would be:

100 + 200 + 60 = 360

Subtract 20 cm on account of the two 90-degree bends.

360 – 20 = 340am

Please note that is recommended to consult a qualified technician when selecting, installing, or servicing the steering system in your boat.
